NYE reminder - Q&A
A lot of questions regarding New Years Eve at Miami Grille UTC. I will try to answer them. First, the regular dinner menu will be available all day and night until 11 pm. If you would like to dine before or during the salsa lessons or first set of Luna Llena, I would recommend a reservation for a dinner table. Second, the dance floor will be positioned in front of the band on the east side of the dinning room. This will help accommodate the larger crowds. It will also eliminate the bottle neck in front of the bar. Third, the balloon drop and festivities will happen throughout the restaurant. I have 3 drops over the dance floor and the bar area. Tables will be offered at a first come first serve basis. There should be plenty of seating with the new restaurant configuration. Some guests are staying at the Embassy Suites afterwards. We always recommend a designated driver and we will do whatever it takes to make sure everyone has a Happy & Safe New Years!

Yerba Mate Herb in MATERVA
Materva Yerba Mate Soda; A Cuban favorite - delicious! It tastes like a sparkling tea soda with a cream finish. Some notes of apple juice and bubble gum. Sweet but not overbarring. A golden brown soda. It smells much like a champagne cola and the taste is close.
Materva is a mate soft drink, (non alcoholic) produced in Miami by Cawy Bottling Company. Materva is made from yerba mate, an herb imported from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Materva is very popular among Cubans and other Hispanics in the United States. Some claim that the drink has health benefits, such as a strengthened immune system, better sexual performance, less stress, and a younger appearance.
The Materva Soft Drink Company was founded in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1920. It was produced and sold in Cuba until 1960, when the Cuban Revolution brought about the nationalization of all private industry. The rights to the drink were bought out by the competing Cawy Bottling Company of Miami in 1965. Materva in 2002 was given the Best Local Soft Drink award by the Miami New Times. Recently, Materva has been distributed outside Southern Florida to larger markets in the United States, Spain, and Central America. The staff at Miami Grille tasted it this week and loved it. Come check it out only at Miami Grille in San Diego!

Iron Beer - National Beverage of Cuba
Ironbeer is a soft drink that originated in Cuba in 1917.
This non alcoholic beverage has been served at Miami Grille for over 4 years and only a select few of our guests have experienced its unique flavors. A wonderfully sweet beverage that crosses the flavors of Root Beer and Cream Soda with a slight citrus zing. Some describe it as being similar to Mr Pibb or Dr Pepper. I know you will have an unforgettable flavor sensation and a story to tell about this original Cuban beverage. Odds are high you will not find this soft drink at any other restaurant in San Diego.
Produced in Miami since 1960 after the nationalization of Cuba by Castro.

Chimichurri
Jimmy McCurry
Chimichurri originated from Argentina and Uruguay, and is a popular sauce used with grilled meat in many Latin American countries. The unusual name comes from 'Jimmy McCurry', an Irishman who first prepared the sauce. He was sympathetic to the cause of Argentine independence and marched with the troops of General Jasson Ospina in the 19th century. The sauce was popular and the recipe was passed on. However, 'Jimmy McCurry' was difficult for the native people to say so the name was corrupted and morphed to 'chimichurri'.

Churrasco is a Portuguese and Spanish term referring to beef or grilled meat. In Latin America especially Argentina, Uruguay and in the South of Brazil a churrasco is a thick cut of skirt steak served with chimichurri.

Elena Ruz (The Sandwich)
Elena Ruz
Cuba History pre Castro at its best - I found this explanation of the name of this popular sandwich on Chowhound Florida, must be true ;-)
Robert Creamer, author of the definitive Babe Ruth biography, explained in a 1960’s interview for the Saturday Evening Post how the Babe went to Cuba to play baseball in the off-season at least twice with his first wife, Helen. Helen, who was of frail health and who rarely went out, asked the head waiter at the Hotel Nacional in Havana, where they were staying, to prepare her a sandwich that her grandmother used to make: turkey slices with cream cheese and strawberry jam on toasted white bread. The head waiter obliged the babseball star’s wife, and thus the sandwich was named Elena (or Helen) Rus (pronounced “Roos”, a literal spelling of how non-English speaking Cubans pronounced “Ruth”). This story was confirmed by that head waiter, whose name was Valsar, and who went to exile in Miami after 1960, and died shortly thereafter.
Of course you can enjoy this Plancha at Maimi Grille here in San Diego and eat a little history.
$ 9.50 served with our mixed fries (half sandwich available M-Th 11am-1pm $ 4.75)
